He belongs in a group of young people that just started to emerge into the real world. They are ambitious for success and sometimes fame. When Twain heard the way the auctioneer's brother speak, he didn't question him. He just assumed that the plug was something he must have. Twain's misfortune teaches the readers that ambition can occasionally blind reason.
