Men of the late 1800’s were overwhelmingly convinced of their superiority. Society’s influence on the individual man was powerful. In a time where social standing was of utmost importance, men attempted to retain control over their lives as much as possible.
John was a model “product” of society. His love and care for his wife was manifested throughout the story but yet his subconscious, society instilled intentions were always underlying in all his actions.

John is a character who portrays the mean of society at the time. His priority is his standing in society. While loving his wife he does not understand her. He is blinded by his own authority and does not see that what he thinks is good for her is actually driving her deeper and deeper into her invalidity. He is just another finished product of society’s craftsmanship.
