At the climax of the novel, Roger, one of the most ruthless of Jack’s tribe, murders Piggy and destroys the conch with a boulder, “the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist.” (Golding 181). When the conch is destroyed any civilization left on the island is gone. The theme of anarchy disrupting society is supported with the progressive disintegration of the conch in Lord of the Flies.
