The Joads have reached a camp were they are able to meet all sorts of people in the same predicament. All share the same collective beliefs, work as hard as you can and take what you need. That is the collectivist slogan, and anyone who isn’t in that frame of mind is the bad guy. At least according to Steinbeck it is. There are, however, people who disagree.

a bad thing, neither is collectivism. They both have good points, and they both have bad points. Neither one on their own is all that good. You must combine the two as if they were both a type of metal. Mix them together and you get strong points from them both and hopefully eliminate the weaknesses that are found on them both.
