In the story “Yellow Wallpaper” we see the main character, a woman who is struggling and in torment driven to insanity by her loving husband. Her husband who is a doctor thinks that the best cure for her is rest. His belief of what rest is, is very similar to Dr. Silasweir Mitchell.
Dr. Mitchell is a male doctor who has no idea what a women really need. In a way he is very sexist

Both John and Dr. Mitchell do not realize that the “rest Cure” is not a cure for any women. Women need to be busy to recover from inner sickness. They also need to be around people to feel love and comfort. To lock a woman down and keep her from the world we live in is torture. No woman can survive in a life controlled by men. They need their independence to survive.
