In 1984, Winston is finally broken down by the Thought Police after enduring emotional, physical and psychological torture. Although he ultimately gives up in the end, Winston should be respected for his persistence in resisting the Thought Police.

Winston is prepared to die for his fight, and he would have tried anything in his power to win, but there is just nothing he could have done.
Although Winston does not prevail in his fight against the Party, in no sense should he be disrespected for giving in. Big Brother has ways to brainwash that makes it impossible to resist. There is no possible way to beat them however Winston makes a respectable effort.
