Winston the Hero In 1984, Winston is finally broken down by the Thought Police after enduring emotional, physical and psychological torture. Although he ultimately gives up in the end, Winston should be respected for his persistence in resisting the Thought Police. Winston goes through an unbearable amount of intense physical torture in his fight against the Thought Police. Although Winston does not prevail in his fight against the Party, in no sense should he be disrespected for giving in. Big Brother has ways to brainwash that makes it impossible to resist. There is no possible way to beat them however Winston makes a respectable effort.
