Utopia

Considering the events of Arthur Koestler’s Darkness at Noon as a whole, the character of Ivanov is a more estimable character than Rubashov. Ivanov believes that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, while Rubashov's newfound belief is that the individual is sacrosanct. In comparing Rubashov and Ivanov one sees that they are very similar people, both are very logical and intelligent, with similar thought processes. Ivanov stuck with this philosophy up to and through out the novel. For the above reasons I believe that Ivanov is a more estimable character than Rubashov because he stuck with his philosophy recognizing the principle that greater good could come to more people if community values were supported over individual rights.
