DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE: 1776
- Written by Thomas Jefferson and passed in July 1776, the D.O.I was the formal statement from the American colonists to the British government, declaring that America should be completely absolved of all allegiances to Great Britain. The D.O.I encouraged American patriots to continue their fight for independence. Also, it later helped many movements of liberation and reform (all men are created equal).
