During the First 6 months of the German offensive out of the US East Coast 397 ships were sunk which totaled over 2 million tons of sunken material. In this effort the Germans cost us over 5000 lives. In their offensive the Germans only lost 7 boats and 302 Germans. The German U-boat offensive was a key part of Hitler’s campaign against America and dealt us a crushing blow for a while.
