Ariel and Caliban - Individual Destiny
In William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the former Duke of Milan,
Prospero, is marooned on a desert island. While on the island, he catches two
slaves named Ariel and Caliban. Sharply different in both body and mind, their
differences in character control their ultimate destiny. Ariel is portrayed as an
airy spirit who is faithful and close to Prospero and Caliban is a resentful beast
who dislikes Prospero. This

Through the differences in character of Ariel and Caliban, we see the
affect of personality on an individual’s destiny. Since Ariel was a civilized,
obedient spirit, he was released. However, because Caliban was so shrewd and
inhumane, he was never set free and left to his better known world of raw nature.
Thus, no matter who you are, it is your actions that control you for eternity.
