The novel takes place slightly after World War I. The post war zeitgeist is portrayed in the novel. The novel shows how people, especially soldiers coming home from the war, lost many good values and hope after the war. A war usually lasts a couple of years, at most, but it’s affects are everlasting. War is one of the greatest evils on earth, and it’s effect throughout history have been greater than of any other series of events.
