The hobbit is about Bilbo Baggin’s transition from a sheltered, possibly even
cowardly little man, into a fearless, selfless hero. He is at first a nervous person,
constantly worrying about himself, but as the story progresses he becomes more used to
danger, and more aware of his own abilities.
From the very beginning of the story he shows very vague signs of, deep down in
side, being a true adventurer. This the narrator states,

And so Bilbo returned home a different person then he was when he started out.
He had become a heroic figure among elves, dwarves, and men, although he was rather
disrespected as a hobbit (for it was thought badly of a hobbit that went on adventures) In
conclusion, he had become, to quote Thorin Oakensheild, “...a good companion on our
long road, and a hobbit full of courage and resource far exceeding his size...”
