One of the most famous stories of all time is found in the first book of the Hebrew Bible. Most people have heard it enough times to be able to recognize and finish the tale after hearing “Noah’s Ark” or “the animals entered into it two by two.” However, many would be surprised to hear that, more than likely, the flood story found in Genesis has multiple sources. the different sources describe Noah’s family. The Yahwist source simply says Noah and his household (Genesis 7:1). The Priestly source goes into much more detail. It names Noah’s three sons and speaks of their wives (Genesis 6:10; 7:7). Furthermore, as the creatures and Noah leave the ark, they all leave “as families.” Even this, priests must have thought, could reassure people that as long as they stayed faithful God would see them through this hard time.
