He was set in his was of not corrupting his family and friends and he didn’t want to go down as lying only to save his own neck, by confessing to witchcraft. I agree with his choice to be killed rather then confess to something that is entirely false just to save his own neck. Especially with his reputation to the town as a honest truthful and loyal man.
