The Taming of the Shrew
Shakespeare uses disguises to give characters the chance to act different from who they really are. This helps us to see that characters can be more than what they seem. Take Tranio for instance, he is the servant of Lucentio, they are friends and Lucentio trusts Tranio enough to give him his identity, after he sees Bianca and falls in love with her. So Tranio takes over Lucentio’s identity,

disguises Shakespeare used in the play help to add depth to the play. Shakespeare used four characters to take on a disguise, Tranio became Lucentio, Lucentio became Cambio, Hortensio became Litio, and the Pedant became Vincentio. By taking on these disguises these four characters are able to take on a whole new personality. These disguises allow them to talk and act a different way than what we would normally see a character say or do.
