One of the main themes of ‘The Merchant of Venice’ is ‘Good verses Evil’. By incorporating characters into this theme, the two I see as most fitting are Antonio, representing good, friendship and honesty and Shylock as Antonio’s enemy, represents evil and dishonesty. Therefore the character of whom I most admire is Antonio, as he stands for all that is good. As much as I admire Antonio, I dislike Shylock, who has no mercy

scene, once Shylock no longer has the advantage and his life is now at stake, Antonio gives Shylock mercy. This shows to me that Antonio is a kind and merciful man, something Shylock should learn from.
With these reasons I believe Antonio is a model for how the rest of the world should react and how their attitudes should be towards others. For these reasons, Antonio is the character I most admire in the play.
