I believe that Queen Elizabeth cleverly puts Richard off, however Richard interprets this as a victory, again showing that he has lost control of the situation. For the first time Richard is truly deceived by another character in the play. As Richard fails to convince Queen Elizabeth that he should marry her daughter. It could be said that this scene is designed to demonstrate Richard’s persuasive powers weakening and heralds his downfall.
