Polidori’s The Vampyre
Essay 6: Vampire Mythology
The Vampyre is a short story written by John Polidori. It was first published in the
New Monthly magazine in April of 1819. John Polidori was the assistant and physician of
Lord Byron, whom he stole the notes from to write the story. The Vampyre would fall
under the romantic gothic genre because of its setting and theme in the story.

his oath. Aubrey starts to go insane and must be locked up in
his room by the order of his doctors. When Lord Ruthven hears of Aubrey’s health, he
can hardly hold in his delight. Aubrey could not stop the marriage and was informed by
his guardians that they tried to help Miss Aubrey, but it was too late. Lord Ruthven was
gone and “Aubrey’s sister had glutted the thirst of a Vampyre!”
