The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorn is a novel which deals much with symbolism and character. The characters of The Scarlet Letter are multifaceted and complex. Hawthorn’s writing is full of symbols describing a character or a theme. Each character has its own role in setting the scene of the novel. An example of this is Pearl, the scarlet letter’s life form. Hester held Pearl tight in her arms on the scaffold.

Shortly after this scene, Hester takes off the scarlet letter. Then pearl throws a tantrum because to Pearl, Hester has taken off a chunk of herself, the scarlet letter A.
In conclusion, Pearl is nothing short of a symbol. She is a character Hawthorn uses to help characterize Hester. Pearl is a way to show what social situation Hester is in an any given moment in the book. She is the living scarlet letter A.
