Alice Walker was born on February 9, 1944. She was the eighth and last child of
Willie Walker and Minnie Grant, two sharecroppers in Eatonton, Georgia. Her parents'
experiences with the oppressive sharecropping system and the bitter racism of Southern
whites greatly influenced her writing. Her first novel, The Third Life of Grange Copeland,
deals with the struggles of black sharecroppers in the racist South. When Walker was
eight, one of her brothers accidentally shot her and
