The protagonist of No Exit is Joseph Garcin. He is the first character to arrive in hell and he is shocked by his surroundings. Because “Second Empire furniture” is the only adornment in the room, Garcin questions the ordinary appearance of this hell and he wants to know where “the instruments of torture” are. Clearly Sartre’s hell is not what Garcin has expected. Garcin discusses with the valet the absence of common amenities

the end of the play they realize that they will be together forever and there is absolutely nothing they can do about it. Inez is the more interesting character. She is insensitive and cruel to the point of being bothersome, but she is clever. Inez seems to know why they have been put together before either Garcin or Estelle begin to think about it and she has very distinct views and she voices those opinions.
