18th Century composer Antonio Salieri, quite insane in his old age, thinks he killed Mozart and tries to commit suicide. Once the most famous composer in Europe, his fame was outshined by Mozart. To a priest, he recalls his life.

and then, when Mozart’s father dies, Salieri disguises himself as the father and commissions work, a Mass for the dead. Under the physical and psychological pressure, Mozart collapses. He becomes even more depressed when his wife leaves him. To make him work still harder, Salieri offers to help him. Just as his wife returns, he dies. He is buried in a pauper’s grave. While Salieri fades into obscurity and insanity, Mozart becomes famous.
