Mid-Term Break
Seamus Heaney’s poem ‘Mid-Term Break’ is a poem about a boy finding out about his smaller brother’s death. The feelings in ‘Mid-Term Break’ are different from conventional poems because instead of grief and sorrow there are feelings ranging from boredom to anger. These feelings are complex because they are the feelings that you would not expect so this poem is quite unique.

puns, alliteration, contrast and by using metaphors. Also I think he chose a good title which can be used as a pun. 'Mid-Term Break' could mean his brother's head breaking or a break in his life or a break in the school term and also he wrote the poem very well. Because of the bitter irony and unexpected approach the poem has many complex feelings, which enhance the poem making an impact on the reader.
