I always thought I lived in a world where everyone was equal. I learned about racism and sexism early in my life, but it all seemed like stories and fables, ending happily. The north won the war, slavery ended, and women received the right to vote. Good always succeeded over evil.
I lived in a bubble of liberal upper class optimism. I grew up in a community in which, to the best of my knowledge,

childlike sense of optimism, however, I can accept the injustice in this world and not let it take over my life. Although there are so many hateful things in this world, there are also many reasons to rejoice. I can cry and scream that “Life isn’t fair!” or I can choose to be someone who contributes to helping myself and others forge their own ways, as Baldwin and Kingston have done in their writings.
