What comes with over 6 billion different sets of characteristics with no two sets ever having the same likeness? The answer …… a person’s identity. Identity is a set of characteristics that somebody identifies as belonging uniquely to him or herself. Identity is complex, embodying both changeable and unchangeable traits and outside and internal influences. Self-identity consists of three unique elements: family, personal, and social identity. Each of these elements is comprised of individual circumstances.

With such individuality and uniqueness, to say identity is complex is an understatement, but it is simple to see aspects from where self-identity is derived. Self-identity is woven throughout life with common threads of family, personal, and social identities and in the end one’s identity encompasses of a set of characteristics that one identifies as belonging uniquely to him or herself.
