At the early stages of the play hamlet is unaware of whether or not his uncle is the real murderer, but as the play progresses he systematically goes about finding out the facts which will lead to his conviction. However at several stages of the play, he will give in to his passion and kill erratically, and as a result he kills Polonius thinking that it is his uncle/step father.
