Gender by Circumstance

Devor claims that our gender is chosen, something that we show with our behavior in social situations. However, after close observation, it becomes apparent that in some circumstances, the gender line is blurred, and in others it is not. So why the difference? What makes people feel as though they must act one way in one situation, and another in a different one? Society will never cease to impose “proper” gender roles upon its people. These roles aren’t always fair, OR accurate, but, as the goth community shows, they CAN be bent or even broken. It is the demise of these rules, in Devor’s opinion, that will finally free society of the constraining gender codes that dominate our every move.
