Earth’s Magnetism Geomagnetism refers to the study of earth’s magnetism. Generation of the magnetic field appears to be related to the motion of fluid upon the earth. “It electrically conducts the material within the earth and the planet acts as a self-exciting dynamo.” [Encarta Encyclopedia 1998] The conducting material and the geomagnetic field may mutually control each other. …showed last 75 words of 477 total…answer is no, in theory there may be a way to do so, however it hasn’t been proven. The earth’s poles switch because the earth spins on an axis and slowly flips. As I mentioned before, the process takes approximately 960 years for the earth’s magnetic poles to flip completely. And so, the only way, as far as we know, to switch the poles of a magnet, is to turn the magnet upside-down.
