Principals and Practices of Diffusion and Osmosis
A. Title: Diffusion and Dialysis
Purpose: To determine permeability of a dialysis membrabe through the observation of
different dyes’ ability to penetrate it.
Hypothesis: Because molecules having molecular weights greater than 10,000 cannot penetrate
the dialysis membrane, the orange dye, having molecular weight of 300, will penetrate the
membrane while the violet dye, having a molecular weight of 100,000, will not and will continue
to remain in tubing.
Experimental Design: First,

would possibly decrease or remain the same.
6. In order to remove the salt from the protein solution, a diffusion and dialysis system would be
set up in which the cut off value in molecular weight of the semipermeable membrane is less
than 65,000 but large enough to allow the substance with the smaller molecular weight in the
mixture to diffuse out of the membrane. This way the salt could, through dialysis, be separated
from the mixture.
