The Development of Telemakhos’ adult self in the first four books of The Odyssey
Telemakhos clearly makes the transition from boy into man during the first books
of The Odyssey. This development into a man is not so much of the body as it is of the
mind. Neither is this journey completely voluntary. Telemakhos must mature in order to
deal with the turbulence surrounding his household. In the beginning of The Odyssey

of a leader. Perhaps Telemakhos might not have begun this transition had Athena not
arrived to encourage him. After he is given a push in the right direction, Telemakhos faces
up to his responsibilities and continues his journey, both geographical and spiritual, with
little outside pressure. As shown in the preceding passages, Telemakhos is a very different
man in Book Four than one would have expected from the boy in the beginning of Book
One.
