Characteristics of children’s speech
* Research has shown that human speech develops in a similar pattern regardless of the language the child hears around it.
*Characteristics of children’s speech develop in the same order, although the age at which they develop varies from child to child.
This pattern of development is categorized into four general areas;
Pre-linguistic stage- babbling (from birth)
From birth an infant produces sounds which gradually become more varied. This stage

for example once a child notices a rule such as placing an ‘s’ on the end of a word to mean ‘more than one’ they use it in every situation resulting in common grammatical such as;
Plural - “Look at the sheeps”
Negatives- “Daddy no eat apple”
Question- “What’s that lady?”
Past tense- “I wented the park”
* It is a long process of two years+ before the child learns the exceptions to the rules.
