Charlotte Temple is a tragically weak character, shaped by many external factors. Her education, both in school and by her parents, was not teaching her how to deal with life. Montraville, an English soldier “eager and impetuous in the pursuit of a favorite object” (Rowson Anthology 869) and on his way to America, carries off Charlotte and seduces her. show her how to live her life, and both seemingly failed. Lastly, Charlotte herself is too dependent upon other people to shape her decisions. She cannot seem to make any time of decision without someone like Montraville or La Rue to make it for her. Although she is a terribly fragile and weak character, Charlotte Temple is a heroine that showed girls of Rowson’s times both how to act and how not to act.
