Emily Grierson is unable to let go of the past. This is seen through examples of conflicts between her and the town officials, as well as herself and her lover, Homer Barron. However, these conflicts are only the thin outer layer of her problems. Emily’s conflict is built within herself and is never released stemming out from her inability to let go of her past beginning with dealing with the death of her father.
